How it works
A version 4 UUID is a 128-bit identifier built almost entirely from random data, written as 32 hexadecimal digits in five hyphen-separated groups. A few bits are fixed to record the version and variant, which is why the third group always begins with a 4. These are generated in your browser using its built-in cryptographic random source.
Uniqueness is probabilistic rather than guaranteed: there is no central registry preventing a repeat, but the number of possible values is large enough that a collision is not a practical concern for ordinary use. That also means a UUID is not a secret — it is an identifier, not a security token, and should not be used as one.
Frequently asked questions
- What is a UUID v4?
- A version 4 UUID is a 128-bit identifier generated from random numbers, formatted as 32 hex digits in five groups. Collisions are astronomically unlikely.
- Are these UUIDs generated on a server?
- No — they're generated locally in your browser using the Web Crypto API, so nothing is transmitted or logged.
