How it works
Base64 rewrites data using 64 printable characters (A–Z, a–z, 0–9, plus “+” and “/”), with “=” used as padding at the end. It exists so that binary or awkward text can travel safely through channels that expect plain ASCII, such as data URLs, email attachments, or JSON fields.
Encoding is not encryption. Base64 is fully reversible by anyone — the Decode tab on this page does exactly that — so it provides no secrecy and should never be used to hide a password or token. Encoded output is also about a third larger than the input.
