How it works

PNG stores pixels losslessly, so nothing further is lost in the conversion — but the detail a JPG discarded when it was first saved cannot be recovered, and converting will not sharpen a blurry or blocky photo. PNG files of photographs are also usually larger than the JPG they came from, since photos are exactly the case JPEG compression is designed for.
